Best Buy Deploys Solar Field at California Distribution Center to Enhance Operational Sustainability
Best Buy has activated a solar field at its Dinuba, California distribution center, generating approximately 5.87 million kilowatt-hours annually, enough to power 559 homes, making it the first distribution center in its network equipped with a solar field. This initiative is part of the company's 2040 net-zero emissions goal, while the company also reduces its supply chain carbon footprint through measures such as the 'Get There Greener' program, cardboard balers, and polystyrene densifiers.

Best Buy has deployed a solar field at its distribution center in Dinuba, California, according to a July 16press release. The field generates approximately 5.87 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually to meet the facility's power needs. According to the press release, its generating capacity is sufficient to power 559 households. A company spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive via email that the Dinuba site is the first distribution center in the electronics retailer's network to be equipped with a solar field.
The field is part of Best Buy's broader efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. Since 2009, the company has been working toward its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.
"Since 2009, we have reduced carbon emissions from our operations by 74% and look forward to continuing to make progress in reducing operational carbon emissions," said Tim Dunn, director of environmental sustainability, in the press release.
Best Buy is also reducing emissions in other areas of its supply chain, such as through the "Get There Greener" program (implemented in Canada) in partnership with suppliers and carriers. According to the company's Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report released in July 2025, the program enables freight sharing between suppliers and carriers by promoting and consolidating full truckload shipments to Best Buy distribution centers. In fiscal year 2025, the company saved 7,767 truck trips in Canada through the program.
Best Buy also uses waste diversion to achieve sustainable operations within its supply chain facilities. The company added 29 new cardboard balers in fiscal year 2025 to help divert cardboard from landfills. According to the report, these balers help compress cardboard, making it easier to transport and recycle along with other recyclables. Best Buy's supply chain facilities also use polystyrene densifiers to break down and compress foam packaging material (expanded polystyrene) into blocks, freeing up more space on trucks and improving transportation efficiency.

"By adopting zero-waste principles across our supply chain, we not only reduce our environmental impact but also improve efficiency, which benefits the long-term success of the business," said Mark Irvin, chief supply chain officer, in the report.
